Map Assets Fallback View

Map Assets Fallback View

When a project doesn't have a defined boundary area (polygon/geometry), Global Watch can still display the project's assets on the map. Instead of showing an error, the map automatically fits the viewport to the locations of all available assets.

Overview

The fallback view provides:

  • Automatic Asset Display - Assets are shown on the map when no project boundary exists
  • Smart Viewport - The map automatically zooms to fit all asset locations
  • Clear Indicators - Satellite imagery controls are visually disabled with an informational message
  • Seamless Transitions - Switching between projects with and without boundaries updates controls accordingly

How It Works

Projects With Assets

If your project has assets with location data but no defined boundary:

  1. The map displays all assets at their geolocated positions
  2. The viewport automatically adjusts to show all assets
  3. You can interact with assets normally (click, inspect, filter)
  4. Satellite imagery controls are disabled since there is no boundary area for imagery

Projects Without Assets

If your project has neither a boundary nor any assets:

  • The standard "no defined area" message is displayed
  • Add assets with location data to enable the fallback view

Satellite Imagery

Satellite imagery features require a defined project boundary area. When viewing a project without a boundary:

  • The timeline bar shows a message indicating satellite imagery is unavailable
  • Playback, date selection, and index controls are disabled
  • Switching to a project with a boundary re-enables all satellite features

To use satellite imagery features, define a boundary area for your project in the project settings.

Supported Asset Types

The fallback view works with all asset geometry types:

GeometryBehavior
PointAsset marker displayed at coordinates
LineStringAll line coordinates included in viewport calculation
PolygonAll polygon coordinates included in viewport calculation

Tips

  • Add location data to your assets to take advantage of the fallback view
  • Define a project boundary when you need satellite imagery analysis
  • The viewport automatically adjusts when assets are added or removed
  • Projects - Manage project boundaries and settings
  • Assets - Create and manage geolocated assets
